The F.E.A.R series of games and specifically the first entry, was a first-person horror shooter game that blended elements of psychological horror with intense action. The initial titles were a mix of horror elements with advanced AI and bullet time mechanics, providing the perfect atmosphere that kept players on the edge. At one point, a third game in the series was even planned for either the Saturn, Dreamcast, or PS2. The PS2 version was even shown off at E3 2003, with those in attendance making positive comparisons to Halo. Sadly, internal restructuring at Sega of Japan killed the project a few months later, and ever since, Sega seems to have no interest in reviving the once-promising character. Still, nothing else out there looks quite like it, the electronic soundtrack is surprisingly catchy final fantasy quiz (especially given the Genesis’ notoriously weak sound chip), and the unique gameplay has its charms. An updated version could be something really special if Sega handed it off to the right indie developer.

Everyone in your party has a strong personality, plenty of opinions, and character growth you don’t want to miss. Honestly, it’s worth playing through several times, each time with different companions along for the ride. One of the surprising delights of the game is companion flexibility.

Many developers and publishers debate which are the “bigger money makers,” and gamers are forced to endure certain bad decisions if they choose multiplayer games over single-player ones. F.E.A.R. is a mind-bending first-person shooter that combines horror with frenetic action set pieces elevated by an innovative bullet-time mechanic. You start the game as a paranormal operative on a mission to investigate a corporate facility that’s been taken over by a psychic and his army of clones. Things aren’t as they seem, and you soon start experiencing hallucinations and seeing creepy figures stalking the halls of the dark and oppressive environment. To make matters worse, the place crawls with enemy troops who can flank or take cover thanks to an innovative AI system.
Sadly there hasn’t been a new entry since 2007, and that doesn’t look like it’s going to change any time soon. While a sequel was supposedly confirmed by Bully’s original composer over a decade ago, nothing has come of it yet, and we wonder if we’ll ever get to return to life in Bullworth. Between the side quests and the main story, there’s a lot to do in L.A.
While this was the last Shinobi game on the Genesis, it did manage to continue on the Saturn and PS2, but after the somewhat underwhelming 2003 spin-off Nightshade, Sega put the series on ice. Unlike every other game on this list, we actually do know that a new Shinobi game of sorts is coming soon. If Sega sticks to what made the Genesis games great, it could be a huge hit.
