The weapons are still being fine-tuned but are headed in the right direction, each hunt feels so intuitive and fun, the world design is engaging, and the new weather/season system adds some needed variety to the gameplay loop. Everyone knows what to expect from a Civilization game, but Civ 7 is making some smart changes to improve the overall experience. The fact that Civs and leaders are independent of one another is not something I would ever have put on a bingo card, and I love the way that the Civs evolve throughout the ages, being replaced by new ones based on how someone plays. Civilizations, in the real world, are built on top of each other, and this is a smart way to gamify that experience. Add in Transitions, the Crisis System, and all these new changes and improvements, and it’s very clear that Civ 7 is, indeed, Civ 7. Everything revealed since then has me excited to jump back in come February.

Luca Guadagnino’s second film of the year stars Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey in a romantic drama based on the William S. Burroughs novel of the same name and set in 1940s Mexico City. There, a man on the run (Craig) from New Orleans explores the city’s nightlife and becomes infatuated with an American Navy serviceman (Starkey). The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival to mostly positive reviews, with Craig earning heaps of praise for his performance.
‘Yellowjackets’ Season 3, Paramount+/Showtime – February 14
Like Guadagnino’s other works, this film explores the complexities of human relationships. Stephen King’s first-written novel finally makes its way to the big screen in The Long Walk, a psychological thriller brought to life by Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence. Set in a dystopian future, the story follows a brutal annual contest where teenage boys must literally walk until only one remains. The cast is led by rising star Ben Wang and features Mark Hamill and Judy Greer. Legendary musicians such as Elton John, Paul McCartney, and Garth Brooks are all set to feature in this film. Peter Dinklage stars in this reboot of the classic dark superhero comedy as a lowly janitor who falls into a vat of toxic waste that transforms him into a disfigured mutant and decides to use his powers for good.

From the sound of that plot, we’re about to have another electrifying psychological thriller on our hands. That’s the pitch for “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” a period horror film based on the “Captain’s Log” chapter from Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” novel. After his success with “Oppenheimer,” Academy Award winner Christopher Nolan is set to adapt Homer’s epic poem in “The Odyssey” which will be released on July 17, 2026. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, who narrates his journey home after the Trojan War to be with his wife. The $250 million production budget makes this film the most expensive project by Nolan and the first blockbuster to be shot entirely on IMAX film cameras.
Metroid Prime 4 has ascended to near-mythical status in the long wait since 2007’s Metroid Prime 3, but evidently this is the year it finally launches. A 2024 gameplay trailer showed a massive battle between heroine Samus and her Space Pirate nemeses, complete with Metroid staples like the Morph Ball. Suddenly, “Scream 6” became one of my most (cautiously) anticipated movies of 2023. I am still miffed about the lukewarm reception of Wes Anderson’s last film “The French Dispatch,” which I found to be a delightful ode to a kind of human interest press of a bygone era. The more he dives into his diorama aesthetic, the more I find myself enveloped in his ideas, his humor, and his emotions. Well, perhaps the popular tide will roll back in his favor with the release of his newest film, “Asteroid City.”

Micheal Gracey, director of The Greatest Showman, takes the reins in a biopic about UK musician Robbie Williams. The film is an original musical based on the life and career experiences of Williams, exploring his ascent to stardom from boy-band beginnings to unprecedented success as a solo artist. He’s portrayed as a chimpanzee, voiced and played in performance capture by Jonno Davies. Rocket Raccoon is getting more of a spotlight this time, with flashbacks teasing his origin story that has only been hinted at in the previous installments of the franchise. The film formerly known as “Disappointment Blvd” is finally almost here, and though its title may have changed, the fact remains that this will be the no-doubt-traumatizing third feature from “Midsommar” and “Hereditary” filmmaker Ari Aster. “Beau is Afraid” stars Joaquin Phoenix as, according to The Film Stage, an exceedingly anxious man whose life is derailed by “supernatural threats” when he returns home after the death of his overbearing mother.
